Final Film Study Notice - The Last Samurai

Hello All,

We wanted to send a note home to let you know that for our final look at the Edo period in Japan we have chosen to show the film The Last Samurai. This film will provide a cinematic look at the fall of the Samurai class, something we have been discussing when considering the transition from the Edo period into the Meiji restoration.

This film is rated 14A in Canada, and does contain scenes of realistic violence, something that was inherent in the Samurai lifestyle and important to understanding their worldview. You can access more detailed information on the content of the film at the following links:

Thanks so much,

Ivy & Jaime

Rocky Mountain Tour!

****The bus leaves at 7:30 on Tuesday morning! Please make sure you are at the school in time to catch the bus!***

Hello All!

We are getting very excited for our upcoming trips, and wanted to send out a couple of reminders!

1. Please ensure that you have paid for this trip through the CSS website!

2. Take some time to review the packing list and forecast for your trip. Being prepared is an essential part of having a great time!

3. Remind your child that they may NOT bring any electronics with them on the trip, with the exception of a digital camera. If the only camera they have is a phone, we suggest picking up a disposable camera for the week.

4. All medications must be handed in to Mrs. Waite or Miss Groeller on Tuesday morning before departure. They will make sure that meds are taken when needed.

Thank you once again for your support!

The Grade 8 Team :)

Jump Rope for Heart Fundraiser

Today, students received some information and a pledge package for the Jump Rope for Heart Fundraiser the school is participating in. Forms! Forms! Forms! (and the Rocky Mountain Tour Booklet)

Hello students and parents!

The grade 8 Rocky Mountain Tour information night (Presentation found here) was last Thursday, and booklets were made available to each family at that time. All of the leftover booklets for families that could not attend last week were distributed today to students. Included in the booklet are 2 forms that need to be filled out. A third form is going out today for rafting.  In addition, as in past years we are requesting that each student bring between 6 - 12 snacks (cookies, bars, etc).  Please ensure that these are NUT FREE.  If you are looking to contribute something healthier, consider looking through these recipes.  All home baked items should include an ingredients list.  Thank you!

Forms that need to be returned ASAP!

1. Human Sexuality permission form (distributed last week)

2. Rocky Mountain Tour permission form (included in booklet Page 1 & 2, Page 3 & 4)

3. Health Form for Rocky Mountain Tour (included in booklets)

4. Rafting Waiver for Rocky Mountain Tour (distributed separately from booklet, today, April 22)

Please return these forms completely filled out ASAP!

Thanks,

The Grade 8 Team!

Spring Camp Parent Meeting

Hello Students and Parents,

As per our grade wide calendar, our Rocky Mountain Tour Parent Meeting is next week on Thursday, April 18th at 18:30 in our IAC.  All parents are invited to attend as useful information will be given, such as (but not limited to):
-trip overview
-packing list
-a review of mountain weather
-a review of behaviour in national parks and general public areas
-a review on wildlife concerns
-acceptable and non-acceptable items to bring
-menu overview
-a description of our accommodations and amenities
-curricular objectives
-information for parent volunteers
-safety and emergency plans
-how you can contact us

This will also be the unveiling of our much anticipated camp booklet.  If you are unable to attend, these will be given to students after specific instructions are given to them.  There are many safety aspects when going on a multi-day trip such as this, and it is important that this information is relayed to parents and students alike. All forms (Health form, Informed consent, and whitewater rafting waiver) are due April 26th. This is important as our coordinators for whitewater rafting need this faxed in to be processed well before our excursion.

We hope to see you on April 18th at 18:30,

Your grade 8 team

Term 2 Report Cards

Term 2 report cards went home today (Monday, March 4). Please return the folder WITH the signed parent feedback form as soon as possible to your homeroom teacher.

On a related note, student-led conferences are this Thursday evening (4-8) and Friday (8am-1pm). As with the term 1 conference, the teachers have designed this conference in order to support completion at home, as well as at school. We understand the constraints of modern life, but would really like every family to complete a student-led conference form. If you cannot make it to the school during the allotted time, that is fine! Your child will bring home a form, or you can print it yourself (see below), and complete it together at your leisure. We would like ALL student-led conference forms returned by no later than March 18, 2013.

Hello All,

Please note that this coming Wednesday CSS will be hosting our annual science fair in the gym.  Public viewings for family will be between 12:45pm and 3:00pm.  It is an exciting time for many of our students and as our grade 8 students continue to progress through virtual science fair, this will be an opportunity for students to add to their presentation portion of their website.

8.2/8.4 Skating January 28

Please remember to bring your skating gear for next Monday, January 28! We will spend periods 5 & 6 skating outside. If you are not planning on skating, ensure you have appropriate clothing as we will be outside for over an hour!

Science Fair Judges Needed!

CSS will be holding our annual Science Fair on Wednesday, February 6, 2013, and we are still looking for more volunteers to help judge this event.  There is no experience necessary and it is a lot of fun. This is an important CSS event as it provides a forum for students to showcase their understanding and passion for science.  In addition, volunteers are inspired and amazed by the quality of work and the interest that students have in their selected topics.  Registration begins at 8 am on February 6th and judges will be finished around 12:30.  Lunch and refreshments will be provided. If interested, please email Kevin Sonico at kevin.s@calgaryscienceschool.com.  Thank you in advance for your continued support of this event.
